Verse 28
“28All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.”
– Genesis 49:28 (NKJV)
“All these are the twelve tribes of Israel (as of this very moment This Monumental Truth is decreed upon the earth, these are The Twelve Tribes of Israel, irrevocably, definitively; ambassadors of God’s very Own People, His most Treasured Possession), and this is what their father spoke to them. (Let us pause a moment and appreciate the other most profound even New Covenantal Truth herein expressed, that as a father speaks to his children, so much more does Our Heavenly Father speak to His People, His very Own Household [Eph 2:19], His Beloved Children whom He receives [Heb 12:6; Prov 3:11-12] unto Himself [Gal 4:6; Mark 14:36; Rom 8:15]; speaking profound mysteries of far-reaching consequence into existence concerning them and, as we shall soon see: blessing them. There is a special intimacy and a sharing in the knowledge of God’s glorious plans that is only enjoyed by The True Set-Apart Child of God [Is 1:18; James 2:23].) And he blessed them ; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.” (I am of the opinion that these blessings are shrouded in mystery and do not refer to the prophetic utterances made in verses 3 through 27, many of which are hard words, even curses, and many of which are directly related to conditions of the posterity of The Tribes as they will come to be known in generations to come. No, rather I imagine that these words carry the assurance of Hope in their bosom and speak of other glorious personal blessings that strengthen the inner man, despite the dire warnings previously addressed to the temporary flesh and the sinful states it continues to harbour. The phrase “each one according to his own blessing ” speaks also of a tender, individualised, personal application wrought through intimate knowledge of each one and recalls to memory also the special mystery and associated secrecy of the “new name” written on the stone “that no one knows except the one who receives it” [Rev 2:17])“
