Verses 14-16
“Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, (not only due to the butler’s effective approach in promoting him to Pharaoh, but most assuredly because of the guiding Hand of the Lord 😄) and they brought him quickly (due to it being Pharaoh himself’s decree) out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. (How truly lovely that Joseph is awarded the means and opportunity to be able to be presented before Pharaoh with his dignity fully in tact; this in turn, subconsciously prepares Pharaoh to view Joseph already in the light of the reigning and ruling dignitary – his very own soon-to-be right-hand-man as it were – that Joseph has been decreed by God Himself to become. The saying ‘dressing for the job you want’ comes to mind 😜. Truly, truly all things do work together for those who are called according to the Sovereign LORD’s purpose when we consider these seemingly smaller details and recognise for example that being able to shave and have available unto him a clean set of clothes is most probably due in part also to the favour he has enjoyed with the captain of the guard these past many years. It is furthermore quite exciting to consider that Joseph is spiritually also exchanging the old for the new as this physical change of clothes marks a much more significant change in season in the spiritual: we already know that his life will never be the same from hereon out 😊.) And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. (Pharaoh himself, by the authority of his word as ruler of all Egypt, declares that truly there is no man within his reach that can interpret his dream accurately – this fact is deemed all the more weighty as we understand that by his influence and means he truly has exhausted all other possibilities. Thankfully Joseph carries the Divine Wisdom to know that it is not by his own hand that he will be interpreting Pharaoh’s dream, for surely the pressure would be unbearable if this were the case!) But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.” (i.e. Pharaoh admits that he has it on good authority that Joseph is able to do this thing, for if he did not have faith in the word of the one, the butler, that vouched on Joseph’s behalf, he would not have gone to the trouble of sending for him in the first place; this familial faith combined with the desperation to have his dream interpreted due to the anguish a lack of interpretation has brought to his spirit thus far, all served in promoting his hasty summons of our young Joseph.) So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.” (In answer, the very first words out of Joseph’s mouth unto the King of Egypt, the very man who is able practically to free him from his bonds, are words renouncing any glory, credit or acclaim unto himself, in favour of bringing glory to the One True God. This is made all the more remarkable in light of the fact that the Egyptians believed their Pharaoh to be a god. Joseph is consequently essentially bringing an offense to Pharaoh, truly staking all to exalt the Name of God – what Faith! And oh, what complete and utter devotion and Love for Him! 😃 But oh how precious also the manner in which Joseph introduces Pharaoh to his God – as the God who is able to give him an “answer of Peace”; bearing in mind that Pharaoh’s greatest affliction is not the dreams that aren’t being interpreted, but rather the anguish and torment and distinct lack of Peace that not having an interpretation for them has caused him in his spirit! Joseph invites Pharaoh to draw near to a God who is able to meet him at his place of deepest need. I also cannot help but chuckle at the unashamed manner in which Joseph refers to our Father in Heaven simply as “God” as if he needs no other introduction or explanation and as if it ought to be apparent to all that there is only ONE True God, which is especially cheeky in light of the fact that the Egyptians are an inherently pantheistic people 😆.)“
“14Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. 15And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.”
16So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
