Genesis 39:21-23

Verses 21-23

“But the Lord was WITH Joseph and showed him mercy, and HE GAVE HIM (always pay attention to the absolute Sovereignty of God highlighted throughout the Scriptures: “for Yours is the Kingdom, the POWER and the Glory, forever and ever Amen”) favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison (notice how deliverance from oppression almost assuredly came through the hand of Joseph to the prisoners held captive here as he would undoubtedly deal justly and generously with them; lobbying on their behalf and preserving their dignity – already acting in his prophetic capacity as a forerunner of our Great Deliverer, the Lord Jesus); whatever they did there, it was his doing (Joseph’s mirroring of Christ is furthermore manifest in this, his own area of dominion where he displays a measure of sovereignty as ‘Delegated’ to him by God Himself; here we can also see how the Lord is incrementally preparing Joseph for the greater task of ruling over all of Egypt – and ultimately delivering His people from famine – by first being positioned in one man’s house, then in a prison community, before ultimately promoting him as Pharaoh’s right hand man – quite literally yet another Christlike image seeing as our Beloved Lord Jesus is also seated at The Right Hand of the Father). The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority (literally: “under his hand”), (through reputation and the consistent manifestations of the Lord’s blessing in all that Joseph did or touched it became inevitable, spontaneous, automatic for the prison keeper to Trust Joseph inherently and wholeheartedly without a second thought, hence his “not [even] looking into anything that was under Joseph’s hand”; this is made all the more significant in light of the fact that, for all intents and purposes, Joseph is incarcerated as a “criminal” and one would anticipate he be stereotyped as such) because the Lord was WITH him (it bears considering how quite literal this statement is, the Lord actively dwelt with Joseph; His Presence upon and around him); and WHATEVER he did (the Lord is not tight-fisted but is the God of abundance; again, quite literally WHATSOEVER Joseph endeavoured was inevitably prosperous), the Lord made it prosper.”

21But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.”
