Verse 15
“15So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”
– Genesis 47:15 (NKJV)
“So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan (i.e. when God had proved that Dependence and Trust in- and upon Him is the only means by which you are to be saved; humbling and making wise those who trusted in riches . . . ), all the Egyptians came to Joseph * and said, “Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence ? For the money has failed * .” (. . . a lesson quickly learned and preciously frankly reiterated here by this gentile nation who have already been subtly trained these past many years to Trust this Christ-type whom God had sent, having seen their own Pharaoh’s love for him and benefitting from his wise rule in countless tangible ways. I find this phrase “for why should we die in your presence?” especially endearing as it so clearly communicates that sweet Trust already so firmly established – and even manifesting in Holy Spirit driven Word of God type phraseology – which serves to indicate their clear understanding of the fact that in The Presence of God’s Anointed One there is safety and salvation forevermore ☺️. I especially enjoy God’s choosing the foolish things of the world – this once wholly pagan, divining, pitiable ‘sheep without a shepherd’ nation – to shame the wise: the nation of Israel come from Canaan who find themselves in the exact same predicament but having not yet been trained by God to recognise The Truth of His Salvation and be able to boldly speak such life-giving words as “for why should we die in your presence?”, but having rather nothing to bring to God but begging hands, thrusting themselves desperate and empty-handed before His Mercy without even the means of understanding as to how Their Sovereign God will save them; as evidenced by their silence at this moment.)
* There is also something especially precious and childlike to behold in the phrase “all the Egyptians came to Joseph ” – how beautifully they implicitly understand This Beacon of Righteousness to be their only source of Hope; how innocently trusting as little children, reminding us of our Lord’s Words: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 19:14). This is also furthermore exemplified in their rapidly-repentant, full-accountability-assuming, frank, honest acknowledgment – as only little children can – that the alternative most heavily relied upon in the world for saving from famine, namely riches, cannot help them; only God’s Anointed can: “For the money has failed.” 😊
